Mammoth Breakout Wrench The Mammoth Wrench is a tool designed to break drill stem, stabiliser and bit joints, in conjunction with the stemlock or bitpot, on downhole hammer or rotary drillrigs. Each wrench is manufactured to suit the required application. The Mammoth Wrench adjusts itself automatically to the diameter (within a set size range) of the pipe to compensate for wear. The grip onto the pipe increases with applied force from the hydraulic cylinder, thus breaking the joint at the required torque. This unit breaks joints safely and easily as a normal drilling activity and therefore improves productivity and saves money. It improves the drilling rate and reduces the overall hourly operating cost. By using the wrench instead of the hammering action of the rotary head to loosen tight joints; - the life of the shocksub, rotary head pinion gears, hydraulic motor output shaft, etc. is extended. - production (penetration rate) will increase due to time being saved on the breaking of problem joints. There will be a reduction in artisan call-outs (to warm up pipes to try and break joints). The risk of cutting up or losing good equipment (pipes, stabilisers and bits) is greatly reduced.
